Aren't there still lines floating around?Yes. But the idea is to a) reduce the occurrence and severity of entanglements and b) recover ghost gear. This has to be done quickly and cheaply.
-
Couldn’t that supply chain be future Ropeless fishermen?Absolutely. We need to build support from the consumer, demonstrate the premium and use that to further the adoption of Ropeless technology deployment.
-
How will this “move things faster?”We need to demonstrate that there is a premium that consumers are willing to pay for more ethically sourced lobster. Our belief is that we can use the Gear Guardian to prove this concept while building a viable supply chain.
-
Does it work?We certainly believe it will but part of this process will be involving ALL stakeholders in the development of the final product. Then we will deploy, test and refine.
-
Why does this make sense? We might not have enough time to wait for Ropeless traps to become mainstream. We firmly believe consumers will stand behind a more ethically sourced product and that we can use that momentum to accelerate the research, development and the role out of other technologies.
-
What if it doesn’t work?It may be the case, but we’re confident that we can move the needle of adoption either way and get the conversation going.
-
Is the Gear Guardian currently deployed? No. We’re in the process of raising funds to produce the first batch.
-
Are you against Ropeless?Of course not. We are big believers in ropeless technology and its supporters. We know it will play a pivotal role in the future. We’re just looking to get things moving a little bit faster.
-
But why can’t you just use Ropeless technology?Unfortunately, current technology is too expensive to achieve any meaningful supply chain. The Gear Guardian is meant to jumpstart things.
-
Will the “Lineless Lobster” brand offer lobster caught with ropeless traps?Yes. While we’re focusing on getting The Gear Guardian developed and deployed, our hope is that we can offer a path towards completely ethically sourced lobster. This will NOT mean exclusively Ropefee technology at the moment.
-
If the Lobstermen are still using ropes…how will your lobster be “Lineless?”Honestly, it will not be…for now. We believe The Gear Guardian can reduce entanglements in occurrence and severity but we’re focused on moving quickly. Hopefully, as other technologies scale they can be adopted more widely by our network of lobstermen.
-
How will lobstermen using the Gear Guardian prove anything?Lobstermen who are using the Gear Guardian are showing to consumers that they care and want to be part of the solution. In turn, consumers will reward those lobstermen with higher prices.
